The Sonoran Desert
The Sonoran Desert is the area all around us. It stretches from the SW area of Arizona to the Northern part of Sonora, Mexico and throughout the Baja. The Sonoran Desert encompasses the Gila and Colorado rivers. It is also the home of Mount Kofa and Mount Catalina.
The Sonoran Desert is also a home to many diffrent animals. The Mexican Grey Wolf, Mountain Lion, Great Hornrd Owl, Golden Eagle, and Rattlesnake all make their home here. Most animals in the Sonoran Desert live in shady areas or underground. Alot of animals are also nocturnal to help avoid the heat of the day.
The Sonoran Desert also has a special variety of plants. The plants of the Sonoran Desert have special adaptions to cope with their environment. Most plants are extremely deep rooted and can survive with little moisture or rain. Some plants of the Sonoran Desert are: The Fairy Duster, Tumble Weed, Jimson Weed, Devils Claw, Ghost Flower, Hedgehog Cactus, the Prickly Pear, and the Sonoran Desert Icon, the Saguaro Cactus.

Why is the Sonoran Desert Special?
The Sonoran Desert is different from many other deserts. The Sonoran Desert is the only desert that has Saguaro cacti. Other deserts have different plants. The Sonoran Desert also has a different climate than other deserts. It is considered a very wet desert. The average desert receives between 6 and 9 inches of rainfall per year. The Sonoran desert receives 10 to 12 inches of rainfall per year. One of the most special things about the Sonoran Desert is that it is the home of Desert Mountain School and all of us.
